Prof. Dr. Luca Giuliani, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Centre for Advanced Study Sofia; Rector of Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin, Germany

Luca Giuliani was born in 1950 in Florence, Italy. He studied Greek and Roman archaeology, social anthropology and Italian literature in Basel and Munich. He received his PhD in Basel in 1975. During 1978-1979 he was research scholar at the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Heidelberg. In 1984 he received habilitation in Heidelberg in the field of classic archaeology, with the work: "Portrait and Message: A Hermeneutic Inquiry into the Art of Portraiture in the Roman Republic". From 1982 to 1992 he was a curator at the Berliner Antikensammlung. Between 1986 and 1991 he was Lecturer at the Freie Universität's Institute of Classical Archaeology. Between 1992 and 1998 he was Professor of Greek and Roman archaeology at the University of Freiburg and from 1998 to 2007 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet, Munich. Since 2001 he is Member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. Since April 2007 he has been the Rector of the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Institute for Advanced Study) and Professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin.
