Brief InformationDr Rumiana Stoilova received her habilitation degree (2002) and doctoral degree (1995) in Sociology. She has been a long-term Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Sociology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, an Associate Professor in Sociology at the South West University, Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria (1997 - 2004), and held visiting research fellowships at the Helmut Schmidt University, Hamburg (2006, 2003), the Mannheim Centre of European Social Study (2005), the Munich Youth Institute, Germany (2001), the Institute of Sociology at Vienna University (1993), and the European Institute in Budapest (1991).

Dr Stoilova's various academic interests are in the fi eld of educational systems, the knowledge society, and labour markets, sustainable development, ddiscrimination and peripheral communities, and gender studies. She has published in Bulgarian, English, and German in native and international journals, and is the author of a monograph on Inequalities and Community Integration (Sofi a: LIK, 2001).

Dr Stoilova holds membership at numerous prestigious academic organisations and councils, such as the Institute for the Study of Labour, Bonn, Germany; the Scientifi c Council of the Institute of Sociology, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences; the Bulgarian Sociological Association; the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation, and the Board of the Bulgarian Association of University Women. She is also Assistant Editor of the Bulgarian sociological journal Sociological Problems.
