Andrei Pleşu studied art history at the University of Bucharest and following his graduation worked as a researcher at the Institute of Art History of the Romanian Academy. Afterwards, he studied in Bonn and Heidelberg and in 1980 became a faculty lecturer in the Art Department of the University of Bucharest. Later he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest and served as Romania's Minister of Culture from 1990 to 1991, and Foreign Minister from 1997 to 1999. Prof. Pleşu is co-founder and Rector of the Romanian Institute for Advanced Study in Bucharest "New Europe College" and a professor at the University of Bucharest, where he teaches history of arts and philosophy of religion.
